Despite dwindling incomes and attention spans, almost two-thirds of UK pensioners claim to pursue at least one hobby (including 873 registered OCD birdwatchers who actually pursue hobbies) and they can undoubtedly be an excellent way to explore a hugely diverse range of interests and make new friends through a shared irrational obsession.

According to the magazine, What Hobby, the most popular interests among pensioners are

Geneology – the study of misspelt family names

Philately – the study and appreciation of one half of the Everly Brothers

Numismatics – the collection of ex-miners and their paraffinalia

Botox – constructing model ships out of yaks
