Anti-macassars were originally devised by the Quakers as a form of defence against the indigenous Macassar tribes of Oklahoma, but were subsequently appropriated by the Mormons, whose religion demanded the immersion of their heads in vats of vegetable oil.
Today, they have no practical function.
